At a press conference Thursday Alexander Zakharchenko, head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), reported that the DPR militia found American weapons at the airport held until recently by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “We found weapons of American manufacture … Well, what do you suppose, if you find an M-16 rifle at the airport?” he asked.
Edward Basurin, deputy commander of the DPR militia, reported that the American weapons, discovered in an abandoned stronghold at the new airport terminal, have been shown to OSCE observers. “There was uncovered an American M-16 automatic rifle, and several side-arms, specifically Brownings.”
“Most alarming find of all: cartridges with steel cores, and exploding bullets, which are banned by all conventions. We showed them to the OSCE observers, who came to the airport,” said Basurin.
Explosions have been bursting again, starting, after a brief pause, on January 9, and the data about the human casualties and about the destruction have been coming in to police and to the Ministry of Emergencies.
Andrei Purgin, Speaker of the DPR Parliament, characterized these happenings as “a rapid escalation of the conflict: while before, incoming blasts would number 10-20 a day, lately, instead, hundreds of bombardments and gunfire, every day.”
