Dnepropetrovsk: “Something’s rotten in Denmark”

By Da_Dzi

Translated from Russian by J.Hawk

The Deputy Governor of the region Gennadiy Korban and Rada
deputy and former Deputy Governor Boris Filatov, Rada Deputies Andrey Denisenko
and Vitaliy Kupriy are conducting an illegal extraordinary City Council session
in order to seize power by force in the regional center.

Everything in that piece of news is beautiful. Every word. Therefore
I want to cite it all. Enjoy. After all, this is what the “nationally conscious”
patriots of Dnepropetrovsk wanted? Legality, calm, and Kolomoysky?

“The Deputy Governor of the region Gennadiy Korban and Rada
deputy and former Deputy Governor Boris Filatov, Rada Deputies Andrey Denisenko
and Vitaliy Kupriy are conducting an illegal extraordinary City Council session
in order to seize power by force in the regional center.”

Once it became known that there would be provocations
launched at today’s City Council session, it was cancelled. However, the
above-mentioned organized group under Korban’s leadership which seeks to usurp
power in Dnepropetrovsk spent the whole night intimidating the City Council
members and demanded that they appear at the council even though the session
was canceled.

In the morning, in order to force the City Council deputies
to participate in the session, armed men in camouflage and masks chased down
the deputies in their apartments, and forced them to come to the extraordinary
session. Pressure on the deputies was exerted by Korban personally, by power
structures [police?], and by masked paramilitaries. They used threats and
blackmail, Korban threatened that the deputies would share the fate of the
kidnapped head of the judicial department of the City Council Aleksandr
Velichko who has been held hostage by Korban for nine days.

The news of the take-over was announced by Opposition Block
deputy Svetlana Epifantseva. By these means 84 out of 119 City Council deputies
were assembled. Several dozen Right Sector militants were present in the
plenary hall. While in the hall, the deputies refused to break the law and to
vote for the removal of the Mayor Maksim Romanenko in favor of Korban protégé Kamil
Primakov.

The first to speak was Andrey Denisenko who said that the
city should change leadership. Boris Filatov spoke after him, threatening the
deputies with Yarosh.”

Legality. Order. Shared human values.

I wonder, what did journalists expect when Dnepropetrovsk
region was put under the control of people who were the acknowledged “#1
raiders of Ukraine”?

Korban and Filatov are in a hurry. It means they sense their
time’s almost up.

J.Hawk’s Comment: The subsequent vote did result in Romanenko being removed, though his place was taken by another Kolomoysky protege, Galina Bulavka. She will serve for at least six months, which is when the next mayoral election in Dnepropetrovsk is to take place.

This action is seen by many commentators as a pre-emptive strike by Kolomoysky against Poroshenko, who has been moving to place his own people in what Kolomoysky considers “his” feudal domain. Still, as president, Poroshenko has the legal authority to remove Kolomoysky who was, after all, appointed and not elected to the position. If Poroshenko were to sign an appropriate decree removing Kolomoysky, would he be able to defy the president’s authority? That seems rather unlikely. Which means it’s at least possible that Kolomoysky is solidifying his grip on Dnepropetrovsk with Poroshenko’s tacit approval, which is a sort of reward for not jumping ship and joining Novorossia.
