“More than 300 tank and BMP crews are preparing for the
army-wide “Tank Biathlon” and “Suvorov’s Thrust” competitions at combined arms
training areas in the Volgograd, Stavropol, Krasnodar regions, as well as in
the Republics of Crimea, Chechnya, Armenia, and Northern Ossetia.”

The first world “Tank Biathlon” championship took place in
2014 at Alabino, near Moscow, between 14 and 16 August. Russian crews became
world champions in the “tank biathlon.”

J.Hawk’s Comment: “Tank Biathlon” and “Suvorov’s Thrust” are two
of several annual Russian military “sporting events”, which are used to promote
high training standards and practices, and to identify not only the
best-performing crews but also units. References to this phase of the
competition have appeared on a number of Russian blogs, with the interpretation
that there’s more to the story than meets the eye. And maybe there is. Several
of the locations mentioned are pretty close to the border with Ukraine. If
there is a message being sent here, no doubt Kiev is among the recipients.
