Fire in Chernobyl is 20 km away from the power station

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant may catch on fire any minute. The fire is quickly spreading by winds and is already just 20 kilometers from Chernobyl NPP, announced the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Arsen Avakov in Facebook.

According to him, about 400 hectares of forest are engulfed in flames. “At 18.30 the situation with forest fires around Chernobyl has deteriorated. The flame is again engulfing the forest at the approaches to Chernobyl NPP. Upper level fire and sharp gusts of wind created a serious threat of fire spreading 20 km away from the Chernobyl NPP”, – reported Avakov.

Because of the fire in Chernobyl the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk immediately arrived at the area and convened the Commission on Emergency Situations. The national guard and Interior Ministry units have been called up.

“Yatsenyuk and officers of the Emergency Situations Service are working on site, in the vicinity of the line of fire,” – writes the Minister of the Interior.

Avakov is coordinating the flights of emergency aviation from Kiev airport.

“We are working. We understand the responsibility and will not underestimate the risks!” – said Avakov.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that the situation is under control.

“The situation is under control, but this is the greatest fire since 1992. We did not have a fire of this scale,” – Yatsenyuk told reporters at the airport “Zhulyany” in Kiev after returning from the fire zone on April 28.
