J.Hawk’s Comment: One of the more striking developments of recent years, which incidentally represents a reversal of earlier trends, is the revival of the division as a maneuver unit of the Russian Ground Forces. It seemed for a while that divisions were a thing of the past, to be replaced by the much smaller separate brigades which, incidentally, bore the brunt of the fighting in both Chechen campaigns. Divisions were seen as, at most, cadre units to be fleshed out with reservists in time of war, second-line formations that played a second-fiddle to the high-readiness brigades. But now we are seeing the return of the division as a high-readiness combat formation. Which in turn indicates that the Russian military is regarding high-intensity land warfare for which the division is a tailor-made formation as not something that might happen in a distant future. One would not be reactivating cadred divisions and raising the readiness of already existing divisions if heavy land fighting was still seen as only a distant contingency.
