Dead Souls: Dead candidate won elections in Rivne region, Ukraine

October 30, 2015

Translated by Kristina Rus

A “dead soul” was elected deputy of regional council. The candidate from the party “Batkivshchyna” Ivan Totovytskiy died 5 days before the elections.

But on the ballot nobody marked him as “out of the race.”

The paradox is that the dead candidate won the county elections.

“The funeral was Thursday, three days before the election. But representatives of his party asked people to vote for the candidate, explaining that it would be the last tribute to the dead.

Today we looked at the protocols and saw that the dead man was the winner”, — said the deputy head of the Sarny headquarters of the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko (BPP) “Solidarity,” Anatoliy Ivashkevich.

At first the BPP was planning to file a complaint against the actions of the opponents. But after consulting with lawyers, refused.

The district election commission will announce as the winner the next MP on the list of candidates from “Batkivshchyna” instead of the deceased.
So it makes no sense to start a scandal because the voters still supported this political party in the district.
