French diplomacy attempts to get its hand back into the Dossier on Syria. Last week a conference on Syria took place in Vienna at the initiative of Moscow, involving Russia, the US, Saudis, and Turks. Paris was not invited to this event.

October 27, France countered the Russian move: the Quay d’Orsay assembled the principle actors in the Syrian dossier to try to find a way out of the conflict, but Russia was not invited. [And neither was Syria! -Tr]

In the dossier, the French position is immutable: discussion with the regime in Damascus is out of the question, even less so envisioning a future Syria with Bashar al Assad. These two principles, most Western powers have abandoned for the sake of pragmatism and realism. The situation in Syria is dramatic. It is urgent to act even sit down at the negotiating table with Assad or his representatives, respectively say Berlin and Washington.

This opening is welcomed by Russia, one of the main allies of

Damascus. Moscow is clear: it is time to end the Syrian chaos. To achieve this, President Vladimir Putin is leading a double offensive: military, against the jihadists and rebel groups in Syria; diplomatic, organizing this new meeting on Friday October 23 with the Americans, the Turks and the Saudis.

According to a diplomatic source, there is clearly an international rapprochement in the Syrian issue. France must therefore reconsider its position

But French officials are adamant: no, and furthermore, no. Assad in Syria is the problem, and can not be part of the solution, and obviously his allies either. Russia is excluded from the conference this Tuesday evening in Paris.
