Meeting on Armed Forces development
The meeting opens a series of discussions on developing Russia’s defense industry, carrying out state defense procurement orders, and armed forces development.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin:
Good afternoon, colleagues.
Today, we start the latest in our regular series of meetings on developing production sectors related to our country’s defense. We will take a look at the work underway on defense procurement orders, and review and readjust our plans if needed for the current circumstances and in light of the recent military exercises that took place. We will make a general overview of the work to strengthen our country’s security.
Practice has proven meetings in this format to be very useful. I remind you that the results that came out of the previous meetings were used to draft several concept documents, and we approved the decision to establish the Air and Space Forces, which means that the different units and the main tasks in air and space defense are now under single command.
The Armed Forces are receiving new strategic missile systems, atomic and multipurpose submarines, surface vessels. We are modernizing the combat aircraft fleet and air defense systems, and supplying new arms and equipment to the ground forces and the paratroopers.
We also adjusted the plans for re-equipping our forces with modern arms, and organized stable operation at the defense industry companies. In this respect, I want to say that our upcoming meetings, including with industry representatives, are extremely important not just for ensuring and improving Russia’s defense capability, but in the current economic downturn, are also important for developing the industry itself and the economy as a whole.
We all know how many people work in this sector, and we know that this sector is related to the high-tech production sectors and in this sense is vital for comprehensive development of our entire economy and for maintaining social stability. I mean this is in the sense that, as I said, this sector employs a large number of people, many highly qualified specialists, and together with their families, this comes to hundreds of thousands of people.
I want to start the meeting by noting that the companies are working steadily. The Armed Forces are receiving new strategic missile systems, atomic and multipurpose submarines, and surface vessels too. We are modernizing the combat aircraft fleet and air defense systems, and supplying new arms and equipment to the ground forces and the paratroopers.
The timely measures we have taken have improved combat readiness and our Armed Forces’ combat capabilities. This has been convincingly demonstrated in the anti-terrorist operation that we are conducting at the Syrian government’s request.
The snap checks and numerous military exercises we have held recently have also confirmed a high level of combat readiness. The biggest operations training event this year was the strategic command staff exercise Center-2015. A total 95,000 service personnel took part in the exercise, which tested new models of arms and equipment.
Of course, the conclusions and proposals following the results of these exercises should form the basis for our plans for military development and modernization over the period 2016–2020.
We will start work today in the same format as before. Once again, I wish you all welcome. Let’s start our work.
According to the Russian president, the true goal of the US missile defense shield is to neutralize Russia’s nuclear potential
Recent drills demonstrate high combat readiness of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces
SOCHI, November 10. /TASS/. Russia will be developing strike systems capable of penetrating any missile defense shield, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday.
“We’ll be working on the anti-missile defense system as well, but at the first stage, as we have said on many occasions, we’ll also be working on strike systems capable of penetrating any anti-missile defense shield,” Putin said at a meeting on the development of the Russian Armed Forces.
Putin said the meeting would discuss the development of such weapon systems that would determine the outlook of the Russian Armed Forces for the next decade and will become a response to the challenges confronted by Russia.
According to the Russian president, the true goal of the US missile defense shield is to neutralize Russia’s nuclear potential.
“The references to the Iranian and North Korean nuclear threats only disguise true plans. And their true purpose is to neutralize the strategic nuclear potential of other nuclear states, except the United States and its allies, first of all, the nuclear potential of our country, Russia,” Putin said.
The United States and its allies continue building the global missile defense system, the Russian president said.
“Moreover, unfortunately, they are not taking into account either our concerns or proposals for cooperation,” Putin added.
Russia has been assured on many occasions that the European segment of the US missile defense shield is developing in the wake of a threat from Iranian ballistic missiles, the Russian president said.
“However, we know that the situation with the Iranian nuclear problem has been settled and the relevant agreements have been signed. Moreover, they have been approved by the relevant parliaments. Nevertheless, the work on anti-missile defense systems is continuing,” Putin said.
Therefore, the references to the Iranian and North Korean nuclear threats are only a cover for the US true plans, the Russian president said.
“And the US true goals are to neutralize the strategic nuclear potential of other nuclear states, except the United States and its allies, first of all, the nuclear potential of our country, Russia. Hence the desire to get decisive supremacy with all ensuing consequences,” Putin said.
“We have said on many occasions that Russia will take all necessary measures to strengthen the potential of its strategic nuclear forces,” the Russian president said.
