According to the publication, the briefing was held at the country residence of British Prime Minister David Cameron. In addition, the head of the counterintelligence service MI5, Andrew Parker, head of the foreign intelligence Britain’s MI6 Alex Younger and Director of the Center of governmental communication of Great Britain Robert Hannigan were in attendance.

At the meeting, representatives of the special services shared with Merkel information on the activities of the “Islamic State”. As the newspaper notes, this was useful to the German Chancellor. In particular, she stated what threat ISIS poses to European countries, and also shared data about foreigners fighting in Syria and Iraq.

In return, Merkel gave the intelligence agencies “useful” information about the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the situation in Ukraine, the newspaper claims. The publication notes that the politicians have close relations. The information provided by the Chancellor was not specified. “They [the participants] had a lengthy discussion about Syria and Russia,” the source told the Times about Cameron.

In October, Merkel and Cameron agreed to keep sanctions against Russia until full compliance with the Minsk agreements was completed. The leaders also discussed the situation in Syria and the question of Britain’s membership in the European Union.

In early December, Merkel became the first woman in 30 years to be named person of the year by Times magazine. The magazine explained their choice by the fact that the Chancellor of the EU overcame the Greek crisis and dealt with the situation of migrants. Vladimir Putin was on the shortlist of contenders for the title of person of the year
