Earlier on Tuesday, January 26th, it was officially announced in Moscow about the beginning of the epidemic of influenza and SARS. The situation concerning the incident is regarded as an epidemic. The incidence rate has exceeded the epidemic threshold of 37.8%. There is an increased in the number of patients with moderate and severe forms of the disease requiring treatment in hospital. On the 22nd of January, a flu epidemic was announced in St.-Petersburg. In addition, a quarantine was enforced in Yakutia, Adygea, Karelia, Ivanovo and Vologda region, with deaths from complications of swine flu being recorded in Ulyanovsk and Kaliningrad regions and in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous district.

Swine flu is an acute infectious disease caused by the influenza A(H1N1). The virus is transmitted through contact with infected organisms, as well as by airborne droplets. Clinically, the course of the disease coincides with the course of disease when infected with other strains of influenza virus.
