The resignation statement of the Minister of Ukraine, Aivaras Abromavicius, has shocked the West, according to the newspaper Die Welt.

“In Ukraine the Minister of Economic Development resigned and made serious allegations against the circle of Petro Poroshenko. His sudden departure could plunge the country into a new crisis”, — states the agency.

Originally Abromavicius was due for talks about privatization, but suddenly he announced his resignation, which surprised journalists. You could hear the disappointment in his words, the newspaper wrote.

According to the journalist of Die Welt, a native of Lithuania, Abromavicius belonged to the group of young experts who enthusiastically began to reform the country. However, having worked in the Ministerial post for more than a year, he realized that corruption in Ukraine cannot be fought.

He accused allies of President Petro Poroshenko in an effort to put pressure on him in order to obtain control over State Owned Enterprises. The last straw for Abromavicius was probably the attempt by the Deputy head of the “Party of Petro Poroshenko”, Igor Kononenko, to appoint his own man as Deputy, noted the article.

“The accusations of the Minister were serious, they could lead to extremely negative consequences for the Ukrainian government,” writes the German newspaper. “He made evidence public that reforms are difficult and that some of the new elite that came to power after Maidan, hinder the fight against corruption”.

Also noteworthy is the reaction of Western countries  following the statement by Abromavicius. The Embassy of Germany, France, the USA and seven other countries, in a joint statement, said that they were “deeply disappointed” with the resignation of the Minister, which, according to them, could make real progress in implementing reforms in Ukraine.

Die Welt indicates that Abromavicius is not the only foreigner in the team of reformers who is critical of the Ukrainian elite. In particular, there is the Governor of the Odessa region Mikhail Saakashvili, who called the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk a “graveyard of reform”, and at the end of last year, had publicly called the Minister of Internal Affairs, Arsen Avakov, a thief.
