German version:

Gregor Gysi is a German attorney and key politician of the political party The Left, a party which emerged in part from the old East German Socialist Unity

– How can you defeat ISIS, Gregor Gysi?

– ISIS is a real catastrophe. First of all Syrians of course can fight ISIS. Kurds, who live there can fight ISIS, Iraqis can fight ISIS. They should be supported.

What should be prevented is – Turkey bombing the Kurds, who are fighting ISIS on the ground.

Now please explain to me why it was possible to block Russian bank accounts, but not ISIS bank accounts? Why can they trade oil today?

Why do we quietly watch the elite in Saudi Arabia financing the Islamic state? I have not heard any condemnation from Mrs. Merkel or anyone else. No.

The government is not paying, correct, but there are connections among the elites. The elites are paying, and nothing is done is about it, this is a problem.

Turkey closed the Syrian border with the Kurds and opened the border with ISIS. Goods, services and people flow there freely. This is despicable.

Is this not happening?

And then we help bomb? We want to become part of the conflict in the Middle East. We cannot allow this at least for historic reasons.

But we must fight the Islamic state. But there are other ways to do it fast.

Of course we must block their bank accounts immediately.

If the West really wanted, we could prevent them from selling a liter of oil, could do it overnight. This is not a problem.

Secret services know everything, it’s not  a problem.

But there is one situation in which I wouldn’t know what to do.

For example, you have a cultural treasure, and it is very dear to you. And you say: you give us money, and you can have it, but if you don’t give us money we will destroy it. What would you do?

I am glad I am not in this position, or it would be very difficult. But everything else..

Or if they take hostages, it’s a very difficult decision.

But the sale of oil, I cannot emphasize enough.

We must not forget that ISIS is a product of Iraqi war.

Who had joined ISIS?

They said that all the members of the leading Iraqi Ba’ath party must be jailed, no matter if they did anything or not. As a result they joined ISIS.

Or the relationship between the Sunni and the Shia. First they had the power, then the others… Now the Sunni joined ISIS.

Bush junior is at fault. He demanded all the members of Ba’ath party to be jailed. What for?

We have done so much damage there.

This is what allowed ISIS to get so many people.

We must learn from our mistakes.

First of all I would deprive them of money, make it impossible to sell oil.

We must have a serious conversation with Turkey, so they stop bombing the Kurds and fight them on the ground.

We must close the border with Islamic state, not with the Kurds.

And lastly, and this is the main thing: Russia and USA must make a compromise.

They have different interests in the Middle East.

But if they find a compromise, no matter what it looks like, the war will be over.

They will be able to put pressure on Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other states and force them to back off. And we also must stop the air strikes.

We should have taken a different role.

Germany should have said, that due to our history we must become the main intermediary in the talks. That would be a good thing.
