“It is now necessary to give all efforts to tighten the blockade and isolate the Crimean peninsula from the mainland by means of an artificial canal across the isthmus…The peninsula would thus become an island,” the petition’s text reads.

The authors of the initiative believe that such a canal could be used as a quick link between the Azov and Black seas. In their opinion, this would open access for vessels serving at the Mariupol Port to bypass the Strait of Kerch to reach the sea.

In order for the head of Ukraine to consider the initiative, it must collect 25,000 signatures within three months.

Earlier it was reported that a petition appeared on the website of the Ukrainian president demanding that the Russian Federation be renamed “Katsapiya” [A derogatory word for Russia or Russian among Ukrainians which has a number of meanings ranging from “goat” to “butcher” or “drunkard.” See the Ukrainian wikipedia page on the matter – JA]
