A number of German politicians, human rights activists and celebrities have filed a lawsuit against Erdogan and other Turkish officials. They are suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
A lawsuit accusing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and other government officials of Turkey was filed on behalf of a number of German politicians, human rights activists, lawyers and celebrities by Hamburg lawyers Britta Eder and Petra Dervishaj. In addition, they represent the interests of relatives of two murdered Kurds and one Turkish MP from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic party.
Turkish officials are suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The text of the claim amounting to more than 200 pages, was presented on Monday, June 27, in Berlin and submitted to the Prosecutor General at the Supreme court of Germany. First and foremost, the document talks about military operations of the Turkish army in the areas inhabited by Kurds in Southeast Turkey. In particular, in the city of Cizre where the fighting between the Turkish army and Kurdish militias left dozens dead and tens of thousands more were forced to flee.
178 charred bodies
In one particular case, 178 people tried to escape the attack of Turkish military in basements, but later their charred bodies were discovered. There is a suspicion that security forces set fire to basements, dousing them with gasoline or killed the victims and burned the corpses, report Eder and Dervishaj. Alleged war crimes, according to lawyers, were carefully documented by eyewitnesses.
The lawyers said that their clients felt their ethical duty to bring to the German court’s “the systematic war crimes of Turkey” as a violation of international criminal law.
MP from the Left party, Ulla Jelpke, who is among the plaintiffs, did not rule out that the German court will not want to hear the case. “There is a great danger that the German justice, as in the case with a similar lawsuit against Erdogan in 2011, will refuse this responsibility,” – she said.
