RT Russia – by: Ilya Ogandzhanov, translated by J. Flores –

Moscow is changing. New residential quarters, squares, streets, highways, subway stations … Everywhere you look, something is being built, demolished, rebuilt. One change is to your liking. Another, on the contrary. But one does not remain unfazed. It’s a city of surprises for Muscovites and guests of the capital. But the most interesting architectural discoveries are yet to come. RT looked into the future and looks at what will Moscow will be like in 20 years

Zariadye Park

The main architectural project of this decade, of course, is Zariadye Park. At the site of the demolished hotel “Russia” will be an unusual architectural and landscape space. The concept is the principle of natural urbanism. In the urban historical buildings and pedestrian areas there will be an entry to four typical Russian landscape zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and wet meadows. These four terraces, as natural images of Russia, will descend from the north-east to south-west – on Varvarka street  to the Moscow River.

Above Zariadye a dome area will be erected, about one hectare covered with solar panels, which will create a special microclimate in different parts of the park. Also at the park taking up 13 acres a media center will be housed, an ice cave, underground parking, and the Philharmonic. Telling RT more about the details of the project was Deputy Mayor for urban policy and the construction, Marat Khusnullin: “The Philharmonic will have a detachable wall, which will be opened, and concerts will be able to be observed by the five -thousand guests of the park … Moreover – to tie it together will be the the so-called ‘floating’ bridge, with access to the waterfront. “

According to the chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov, the diversity of the country will be represented in the park: the climate, nature, people, cooking, everything – down to the smells and sounds.

“Zariadye” will be the first major park built in Moscow in the last 50 years. It will open in 2017, to mark the 870th anniversary of the city.

ZIL: rebirth

Yesterday’s industrial zone, according to the development plan, will be transformed into a mini-city of the 21st century. Here, covering about 400 hectares will be residential areas, business and leisure centers, parks, a sports cluster, and has its own autonomous educational area, and as a tribute to history, to continue the production of cars.

“ZIL Model – This model is a very comfortable, synergistic development, which combines the interests of both business and future residents of the town” – Sergey Kuznetsov said in an interview with RT. “This is a really harmonious, multi-functional development for the former industrial area. “

Above the buildings are housing complex studios, “ZILART” involves the work of ten leading architects in the world – each with his own approach. The result should be nothing less than an architectural ensemble.

In addition to comfortable housing, where will be a branch of the Hermitage, parks with a total area of almost 20 hectares, a pedestrian boulevard, a spacious waterfront, which will be ready to compete with Paris’s Orsay and Cannes’ Croisette, as well as theaters, concert halls, art galleries, art centers.

Another two iconic structures will be updated in ZIL, the “Arena of Legends” sports complex  including three ice rinks, and the primary architectural project – a multifunctional complex called “Planet ZIL”.

“This is a very good example of architectural and planning decisions, aimed at solving public spaces solutions. Probably because of these large-scale projects, it this is the best time in Moscow since the early nineties, ” Sergey Kuznetsov said.

And other industrial zones

ZIL is not the only industrial zone, subject to redevelopment. There in Moscow are 22. The most famous – “Hammer and Sickle”, “Lenin”, “Perovo”, “Upper boilers”, the territory of the former Tushino airfield. The total area of the reorganized industrial areas – about 13 thousand hectares..

On the banks of the Moscow River

Convergences and embankments of the Moscow River. They should become centers of attraction for tourists, and residents, as well as holidaymakers. Along the coastline there will be parks, beaches, and squares. The embankments are divided into three types: pedestrian, traffic, and combined. The last two will be equipped with bicycle paths.

Sergey Kuznetsov has allocated the main vectors of development of the quays: it should be a public place, it is necessary to develop the adjoining territory and its own functionality, plus the need to develop water transport and the creation of mooring points.

According to Sergei Kuznetsov, as a result of the implementation of the reconstruction project of the embankments of the Moscow River, “we can get to the center of the city in a new way.”

It will be possible to learn the details of what  the bank of the Moskva River will be like from his upcoming published report  on projects embankments, Moscomarchitecture .

Road problems

Whether Moscow be able to fix its road in 20 years, one of Russia’s two main problems, is unknown. But there are plans underway. Just in 2016 plans were made to build about 100 km of roads.

Particularly noteworthy are new highway interchanges with their intricate, hovering above the ground loops, reminiscent of scenery from a sci-fi movie. There are about 20 new road nodes like this planned. To complete the futuristic picture it is necessary to mention the fast tracks, with their platforms, tunnels, and bridges, that cross the city in different directions.

Moscow subway

The scale of the Moscow Metro construction is impressive. For two decades, it has been planned to introduce 60 new stations into operation. Overgrown radial metro branches now clog the third interchange circuit. “By 2025, the length of the subway will be increased by 1.5 times,” said Marat Khusnullin. As a result, the subway would be in “walking distance” of about 93% of the inhabitants of Moscow.

The design of new stations will be made in the best traditions of Soviet metrostroevtsev. The basis of the concept – the design of the station must be reflective of the place of its location. Thus, at each stop “subway” is its face.

“For us, the underground station is one architectural object, symbolizing the place where the person is. It’s the sign of the place,” Sergei Kuznetsov said. “On the periphery there is not always a lot of good architecture, and the subway station should be an object that forms the architecture of the area. “

Moscow ring

The third main ring of the Russian capital, after the Garden and the Moscow Ring Road is the CIT. Reconstruction of the Moscow ring railway will transform it into an easy subway, which will be integrated in the metro system. The CIT has already been started this year. It will give impetus to the development of industrial areas of the capital, will make the outskirts of the city accessible. And besides, it will connect to landscape and parks of the capital: the estate Mihalkovo, Botanical Garden, VDNKh, and Elk Island National Park and the Sparrow Hills nature reserve .

All stations will become CIT transport interchange nodes with offices, shopping centers, shops and cafes.

Forty times forty

Implementation of the “Program-200” for the construction of Orthodox churches, if they do not make Moscow, as in pre-revolutionary times, the city of Soroka, then it is at least much closer to its old image. Each area will have its own church, built on a unique architectural design. The projects will revive the traditions of Novgorod, Pskov, Byzantine, Italian and other architectural schools.

“46 churches have been built, 39 under construction, 40 in the design, installed 102 wooden chapel”, State Duma deputy Vladimir Resin said in an interview with RT, who oversees the program for the creation in Moscow of 200 new Orthodox churches.  “To carry out the tasks will already take at least 20-25 years. “

However, time has made its own adjustments to the project. “If it was originally on the construction of 200 churches within the boundaries of old Moscow, then today this figure is no longer relevant”, said Vladimir Resin. “Moscow has doubled, hence, the number of churches there should be more, because the need for them has increased. “

Sports arenas

The FIFA World Cup to be held here in 2018, and that will give fans not only exciting matches, but new stadiums – “Luzhniki”, “Dinamo”, CSKA. Reconstruction of the main sports ground – a big “Luzhniki” sports arena – is scheduled for completion later this year. Ground heated, retractable roof, 81 thousand seats. The stadium is equipped with the latest technology. Around the arena a sports town will develop, complete with a pool, ice rink, and a landscaped park with a bike path.

Since Spartak fans have their new stadiums, finally fans of “Dynamo” and CSKA will have one also, closer to the metro station

New Moscow

The greatest investment will require the development of lands attached to Moscow territories. “Territories of the Novomoskovsk tri-county area we consider to be the largest” growth point “metropolitan area and the driver of development in the years to come” said Marat Khusnullin. “By 2035, there will be 1.5 million people living here, and it will create 1 million jobs, there is a plan to build 100 million square meters of real estate in the integrated development plan, to reconstruct more than 380 km of roads and construction of about 476.8 km of the road network ” .

The increased activity is shown to investors. “In the Rumyantsevo office and business center there will be 30 thousand jobs within 250 thousand square meters, a section was built by a Czech investor in just half a year,” said Marat Khusnullin. “Investors have built an international business park in Kaluga off road K2, the French are now building an international business center in Bekasovo “.

In short, new Moscow will be trying to keep up with her older sister.
