Signed into law by President Obama, the “Magnitsky Accountability Act” was passed in 2012. The main intention of this legislation was to “punish” Russian officials who were “thought” to be responsible for the death of financial lawyer Magnitsky, who had died in prison in Russia. The officials on this ”Magnitsky List”, none of whom accept these charges, are prohibited from entrance to the United States and the use of its banking system.

In response, Russia compiled a list of 18 Americans to be banned from entering the Russian Federation. These individuals are implicated in human rights violations, including those involved in legalising torture and indefinite detention of prisoners (such as Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff, David Addington.)

The moral of this story is not so much what happened to Magnitsky, but the outrageous hypocrisy that is being practiced by the US in almost every sphere, including human rights. If there was no Guantanamo, no death penalty, no persecution of whistle blowers, no world’s highest incarceration rate, no police brutality, no prisoner slave labour, etc – maybe US leadership could be justified in their seeming moral authority.
