Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the fact that not all Syrian opposition groups will attend the Geneva negotiations on Thursday, shall not pose an obstacle for the possible success of the negotiations.

During a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart, Edward Nalbandian, Lavrov pointed out that Moscow has always been pushing for the greater representation of all Syrian opposition groups, insisting that the Syrian Kurdish groups shall be involved in the negotiations. He also reminded that Moscow has repeatedly called for the UN Security Council resolutions to get adopted and to ensure the presence of all opposition groups in Geneva negotiations.

Regarding the issue of establishing the so-called “safe zones” in Syria, Russia’s Foreign Minister announced that he had already discussed this particular issue with his US counterpart Rex Tillerson, stressing that Moscow is waiting for further clarification as regards the Washington’s initiative on establishing the “so-called” safe zones in Syria, stating that Washington must take into account that Syria is a diverse land and that no such moves can be made without the coordination with the Syrian government. Lavrov also expressed hope that the United States (according to the announcement previously made by the US President Donald Trump), are indeed interested in the settlement of the Syrian crisis as well as fighting against ISIS and Al Nusra terrorists. ”

Lavrov and Nalbandian also discussed the Russian-Armenian relations, the crisis in Armenian Karabagh and the war in Syria. Nalbandian also expressed his gratitude to the Russian side for assisting Armenia in transferring the Armenian humanitarian aid to Syria.
