About 13 million Dutch voters are heading to the polls on Wednesday in order to elect 150 members of the lower house of parliament amid the controversial immigration debate and diplomatic tensions with Turkey.

The voters are able to cast their votes at some 9000 polling stations and chose between no less than 28 parties.

The media side of the election is, however, mostly focused on a rivalry between the current Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, leader of the liberal-democratic People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and the right-wing populist politician Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV).

In accordance with the rules of the proportional representation system, any party that receives more than 0.67 percent of the votes, will pass the required threshold and thus gain at least one parliamentary seat.

According to the pre-election opinion polling results and predictions, the governing VVD will likely win the election with approx. 24-28 seats and thus defeat it’s greatest competitor, Wilders’ PVV, by a relatively small margin. The latter is estimated to win about 19-22 seats and is therefore said to come in as second.

The exist polls (that in the past used to be very accurate) will begin broadcasting, following the closure of the last voting booths at 9:00 pm CET.

Update: PM Rutte’s party is in the lead and has already secured 31 out of 150s eats, whereas Wilders’ PVV secured 19 seats.
