Russia Condemns Saturday’s Terrorist Attack in Damascus

Russia condemns Saturday’s terrorist attack that occurred near Bab Al-Saghir cemetery in central Damascus, emphasizing that terrorists should not be allowed to derail the efforts of Astana and Geneva negotiations, dedicated to the settlement of the Syrian crisis.

 “Terrorists should not be allowed to implement their intentions in order to derail the international community’s efforts in Astana and Geneva to enhance the cessation of hostilities and unify the efforts of all Syrians in facing the terrorist threat and who are about to move forward with a political solution, based on the UN Security Council resolution No. 2245” , the Russian Foreign Ministry was quoted saying in a statement. The statement further added that Moscow firmly and decisively condemns another barbaric act of the terrorists and wishes to express condolences to the families of the victims and a speedy recovery to the injured.

On Saturday morning, two explosive devices went off near Bab Al Saghir cemetery in Bab Msalla square in central Damascus, Syria’s capital city. More than 40 people were killed and some 100 people were injured. Majority of the victims are said to be the Iraqi Shia pilgrims who were about to visit the Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque. Material damage to public and private property was also caused in the blasts.
