RIA Novosti – translated by J. Arnoldski –

Militants of the Islamic State terrorist group attacked the Syrian army’s positions on the Homs-Furqlus-Palmyra highway at the same time that the US launched missile strikes at Syria’s Shayrat airbase east of Homs, a source has told RIA Novosti.

“Is it a coincidence that ISIS militants attacked one of the defense positions of the Homs-Palmyra highway at the same time as the US strike on Shayrat base?” the source asked.

According to the source, the terrorists began their assault at the Homs-Shayrat sector around 2:00 A.M. and held seized territory for more than an hour until government troop reinforcements were deployed. Now the Syrian army is pressing the terrorist back deep into the desert.

The governor of the Homs province, Talal Barazi, informed RIA Novosti earlier that the Shayrat airbase is one of the main support forces for the army in its fight against ISIS in eastern Homs, including on the Palmyra front.

On the night of Thursday-Friday, the US launched a massive strike of 59 rockets at Syria’s Shayrat airbase. Donald Trump called the bombing a response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by Syrian government troops in Idlib. According to the latest reports, five people were killed in the attack and seven were wounded.

The Pentagon stated that it tried to “minimize risk for base personnel,” including for the Russian officers present at the facility.

Moscow regards Washington’s action as aggression against a sovereign state. According to President Vladimir Putin, the missile attack was carried out under a false pretext.
