Admiral Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, stressed that “some countries in the region are deliberately attempting to weaken the Afghan national security by providing the ground for transfers of defeated terrorists from Iraq and Syria to Afghanistan.”

During a phone conversation, held on Saturday evening with his Afghan counterpart Hanif Atmar Dan, Shamkhani expressed Iran’s readiness to provide assistance in order to strengthen and increase security cooperation between the two countries, saying “making such move will enhance the security and stability of both countries”. He also expressed condolences for the victims of the horrific Taliban attacks in Balkh which claimed the lives of more than 100 Afghan soldiers, adding that “the Afghan people have shown strong determination in confronting terrorism”.

For his part, Hanif Atmar Dan assured that Afghanistan is committed to continue with cooperation and coordination with Iran in the uprooting of terrorism from the region, in addition to strengthen the security and stability.

Earlier on Saturday, Afghanistan was devastated by one of the gruesomest Taliban attacks ever. In the Northern province of Balkh, jihadists attacked the Afghan military compound. More than 100 soldiers were killed and many more were left wounded. Majority of the dead are said to be young soldiers that were receiving their army training.
