Jihadist Groups to Participate in Astana Talks

According to the media outlets of the so-called “Syrian opposition”, its armed branch is currently making a decision whether to participate in the forthcoming round of Astana talks on the settlement of Syrian crisis, scheduled to take place between May 3rd and 4th.

In an interview with the newspaper Asharq Al Awsat, Fatih Hassoun, an armed opposition representative, said they are currently considering to send a delegation to Astana, however, no final decision was made as of yet. He gave no further details. 

Hassoun pointed to recent positive developments, namely the implementation of ceasefire, as well as to the agenda of Russia to invite as many groups as possible to negotiate and its openness towards the participation of Qatar and United States  in the talks. 

Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, said that the armed branch of the Syrian opposition has not yet confirmed its presence at the negotiating table, expressing his country ‘s hope that they will eventually make a positive decision and come.

At the last round of Astana talks, held between March 14th and 15th, the so-called “ Syrian armed opposition” did not participate.
