“Look me in the eyes when i’m talking to you”, the Russian UN envoy Vladimir Safronkov was heard saying to his British counterpart Matthew Rycroft during the UNSC session on Syria. He also reminded of the destructive British role in the Middle East, while the British envoy was trying to blame Russia and Assad for the violence.
Earlier on Wednesday, the UN Security Council began a meeting on the Syria situation.
Staffan de Mistura, special UN envoy for Syria crisis, told the UN Security Council that he is ready to prepare a new round of talks for the month of May, however, cooperation with the US and Russia is needed.
“The two countries have “serious differences”, but also a common interest in ending the six-year war that has killed 320,000 people”, said de Mistura .
“They must find a way to work together to stabilize the situation in a deliberate, realistic and concerted way in support of the political process. The United Nations is ready to lead a real negotiation on a package for an orderly, mapped-out, credible and irreversible, agreed political transition to end the war” he further added.
The council was in session in the wake of the upcoming vote on a draft resolution which is demanding the cooperation of the Syrian government in an international investigation, related to the suspected use of chemical weapons in Syria’s Khan Sheikhoun back on April 5th. Russia is expected to veto the decision due to the lack of evidence.
Currently, the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is visiting Moscow where he already met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit comes in the wake of the US missile strike on Syria.
Russia also threatened that any further aggressive moves of the US could result in unexpected and disastrous consequences.
