Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said that the US missile strike on the Syrian Sharyat airbase in the countryside of Homs, posed a threat to the lives of the Russian military personnel in Syria, stressing that Russian side is taking necessary measures to ensure the security of the Russian military in the wake of the American attack.

At the Sixth International Security Conference, held in Moscow, Shoygu expressed the need for cooperation between Moscow and Washington in fight against terrorism, recalling that Moscow did not abandon any intention to establish a cooperation with Washington, but these efforts have so far failed to reach an agreement.

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Washington’s strike on Syria impedes the creation of a wider international counter-terrorism front and called for a prompt and thorough investigation into the Khan Sheikhoun chemical attack in cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, pointing to the recent statement of G-7 group about the need to further strengthen counter-terrorism efforts, despite no progress being made in this field.

He then said that Washington’s deployment of a global missile defense system could lead to an increased likelihood of using nuclear weapons, describing the deployment of a US missile shield as a major obstacle of achieving worldwide political stability.

Lavrov also expressed concerns over the escalation of tensions in the Korean Peninsula and warned of the negative consequences that might occur, should military force be used to resolve the crisis in North Korea.
