Today’s visit of Angela Merkel to Sochi is her first trip to Russia after a long break, due to the Ukrainian crisis. But it will hardly be a breakthrough – writes Politnavigator – Merkel needs a meeting with Vladimir Putin for the internal German public, for the upcoming elections.
“We understand the desire of Angela Merkel to visit Russia is long overdue, but it does involve the political situation in Germany itself. In the fall, there will be elections; and many citizens of Germany do not like the policy of the authorities as it pertains to Russia. For Merkel, it is important to show that it maintains a dialogue with Russia”, – quotes a source from the Russian side, engaged in preparations for the visit.
“Illegal annexation of Crimea and Russia destabilising Eastern Ukraine, are the two factors that seriously aggravate our relations”, – said Germany’s government spokesman, Shteffen Zaybert, in anticipation of Merkel’s trip.
They have also noted that for now the only issue on which Germany and Russia are in full understanding is the construction of the “Nord Stream-2” project . The Germans could affect the acceleration of the process – for example, to persuade Sweden and Denmark to agree to lay the pipeline through its territorial waters.
