According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia supports China’s One Belt One Road project and intends to actively participate in it.

China announced its new economic strategy in 2013 as “One Belt One Road,” which aims to create infrastructure and develop ties between the countries of Eurasia. The project includes two key spheres of development: the economic zone of the Silk Road and the maritime Silk Road, i.e., the creation of a trade corridor for direct delivery of goods from East to West on favorable terms.

During a a round table held on the second day of the One Belt One Road forum being held in Beijing, Putin stated: “Everything that is being proposed fits the trend of modern development, is extremely necessary, and is in high demand. Therefore, Russia not only supports the One Belt One Road project, but will actively participate in its realization together with our Chinese partners and, of course, with all other interested countries.”

Putin praised the idea of establishing an economic zone and mutually beneficial trade between Asia and Europe, calling such “timely” and an “important initiative.” In the Russian leader’s opinion, the project takes into account modern trends in the global economy while also reflecting the general need for coordinating integration processes not only on the Eurasian continent, but around the world.

“It is important for all integration structures – such as those already existing in Eurasia and those newly arising – to be based on universal, recognized rules and, of course, also take into account the peculiarities of participating states’ national models of development, and to be open and transparent,” President Putin added.
