Lavrov calls the strike of the US coalition in the At-Tanf area of Syria illegal.
NIKOSIA, May 19 – RIA Novosti. The US attack on the government forces of Syria is illegal and violates the sovereignty of Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
“No matter what the reason for the decision of US command to strike such a blow, it is illegitimate, it is illegal, and it is another gross violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic,” he told reporters.
Lavrov said that the US tried to justify the blow to Syria by saying that “these government forces created a threat to the opposition, which cooperates with the American military amidst the coalition that the Americans are heading.”
The minister also said that, according to some reports,, several dozen civilians were killed as a result of this strike. He clarified that now Moscow is checking all the details of what happened.
“We are very concerned that the overall understanding about the need to unite the efforts of all who really oppose the terrorists of IGIL * and the former “Jabhat-an-Nusra *” is unravelling,” Lavrov said.
“All this, of course, is taking place against the backdrop of growing calls from Washington and a number of other Western capitals to stop all contact with Bashar Assad,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said, and he noted that “this is, in fact, indulging terrorists.”
A coalition led by the United States on Thursday night dealt an air strike against pro-government forces in the At-Tanfa area in southern Syria. The command “on the ground” considered the actions of these detachments as “threatening forces of the coalition.” At the Pentagon they were saying that the blow was struck on a column that entered the “conflict prevention zone,” where there were armed groups supported by the United States.
The coalition included this attack in the list of attacks on the grouping “Islamic State.” *
The Ministry of Defense of Syria, in turn, reported that the positions of the Syrian army in the desert were attacked, which led to “victims and material damage.”
In Moscow, the actions of the US coalition were called “completely unacceptable,” as they violate the sovereignty of Syria.
The United States and its allies have been conducting anti-ISIL operations in Syria since 2014 without the permission of the country’s official authorities. In Washington they say that strikes are also being made against terrorists of the Al-Qaida group, *, but in official releases, as a rule, only attacks on ISIL * are mentioned.
