Names of Participants in the Forthcoming Astana Talks Revealed

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed the names of participants in the forthcoming round of Astana talks on settlement of Syrian crisis.

Among the already confirmed ones are Staffan de Mistura, UN’s special envoy for Syria and Stuart E. Jones, US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. 

Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, Mukhtar Tellobrda, stressed the number of observers in the negotiations is the same last time and includes a high-level United Nations delegation. 

A Jordanian delegation is said to participate in the talks as well.

Tellobrda also confirmed the presence of Mohammed Alloush, leader of the notorious terrorist group Jaysh Al Islam, who will act as the key representative of the so-called “armed opposition” during the negotiations. 

Meanwhile, Yahya Al Aridi, member of the Supreme Committee for Negotiations of the so-called “armed opposition”, said his delegation intends to give importance to the issue of strengthening the ceasefire status during Astana talks, claiming that maitaining ceasefire is the most important issue of the so-called “opposition” as regards negotiations. 

The delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, which is once again headed by dr. Bashar Al Jaafari, Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, has already arrived in Astana and is currently preparing for participation in the new round of talks that will take place from May 3rd to 4th.

For Tuesday, an expert-level meeting between representatives of the so-called guarantor states, namely Russia, Turkey and Iran, is also scheduled, with the high-level talks set to begin on Wednesday.
