Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday reassured his country’s support for resumption of direct dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, few weeks ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to Israel and (supposedly) the Palestinian territories.

During a meeting with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the southern Russian city of Sochi, Putin said Moscow continues to support the resumption of direct dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, adding that peaceful coexistence of two states, Israel and Palestine, has to be maintained in order to assure the security and stability of the region.

In turn, Abbas expressed appreciation for Russia ‘s efforts in fight against terrorism and its contribution to the strengthening of security and stability in the Middle East.

On the 3rd of May, Abbas also met with the US President Donald Trump. Abbas then invited Trump to visit the Palestinian territories, however, no confirmation of the visit was made by the White House as of yet.

Previously, the US president repeatedly declared his intention to reach a compromise between Israelis and the Palestinians, even offering himself to act as a mediator or an arbiter.

Abbas and Putin also discussed the Palestinian-Russian relations and looked for way to boost the ties in a variety of fields. Abbas then informed Putin about the situation and recent development of events in the Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian president began his two-day visit to Russia on Wednesday.
