Perez Trabelsi, President of the Jewish community at the Temple of Ghriba, Africa’s oldest Synagogue, located in the Tunisian island of Djerba, said on Wednesday that Tunisia is safer than Israel.

His statement came in the wake of security warnings, issued by Israeli officials about not visiting the country and making pilgrimages to the Jewish temple of Ghriba, due to security threats.

“Warnings of the Israeli officials about the likely security threats are baseless, Tunisia is even safer than Israel itself”, Trabelsi was heard saying.

“Our response to these warnings will be to invite an even greater number of people, we even aim at a 150% increase when compared to last year”, added Trabelsi, while pointing to the people from the large Tunisian Jewish diaspora, scattered all over the world, France Canada and Israel including.

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli officials issued a warning to their citizens, warning them of security risks when traveling to Tunisia, claiming there is a possibility of terror attacks throughout the country and those already there were even urged to return to Israel.

Tunisian authorities, however, increased security in Djerba by carefully monitoring all entry points to the island, in addition to setting up more control points at key tourist attractions and pilgrimage sites.

The Tunisian island of Djerba is a home to more than 1000 Jews whose presence on the island goes at least 2500 years in the past.

Every year, thousands of Jews from all over the world make a pilgrimage to the Synagogue of Ghriba, also known as the oldest Jewish temple in all of Africa.
