Anti-corruption protests in Morocco continue amid the attempts of thwarting them.

Clashes broke out between demonstrators and members of the Moroccan riot police in the town of Amzurin Almujawiratu, located in the north of the country, close to the city of Al Hoceima that has been witnessing massive protests for the third day in a row.

Hundreds of youths were reportedly throwing stones at anti-riot police. The later respondent with water cannons.

Protesters are demanding a release of Nasser Al Zafzafi, a prominent political activist that has been leading anti-corruption protests in the Rif region since several months ago.

Calls for a general strike in the city of Al Hoceima were also made.

Human rights activist Nawal Ben Issa said members of Moroccan security apparatus summoned her and interrogated her, regarding the new wave of protests in Al Hoceima that broke out following the arrest of Nasser Al Zafzafi.

Al Zafzafi’s arrest occurred last Friday, right after the sermon in Al Hoceima.

During the speech of a local imam, delivered at the sermon, Al Zafzafi made an interruption and lashed out against him, while receiving an overwhelming support from the audience.

Right after that, police arrived at the scene and riots broke out between them and Al Zafzafi’s supporters. He was eventually arrested at his home Al Hoceima.

Although political protests in Morocco are rare, tensions in the city of Al Hoceima have been going on since October 2016, after one of the local fishermen was crushed to death inside a garbage truck while trying to retrieve his fish.
