Today’s reception of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko by President Trump, resembled a reception with a head of a banana republic, said the ex-Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Leonid Kozhara.
“The visit took place in rather unusual circumstances and in. At my time, I prepared for visits to the US with Kravchuk, Kuchma and Yanukovych. This is the first time that I see that our party did not know whether the meeting will include the US President, and if so – in what format and when. The White House announced that the meeting will take place on the day before arrival.”
Ukraine did not know whether the meeting with President Trump would take place, and went at random, to meet with at least Mike Pence. This, incidentally, does not correspond to the status of a President of a country, but some kind of banana republic.
All of this suggests that neither Ukraine nor the United States had much content planned for this meeting. It does not exist.
“As for military cooperation (as was discussed at the meeting), it is at the most primitive level. All cooperation is reduced to the fact that Ukraine today demands from the West, especially the US, a a lethal weapon. The relevant bills have already been discussed in the Senate and went somewhere. But I very much doubt that the White House will pass a law that will strengthen the escalation in the Donbass, which does not help the US nor Europe.”
“Overall, therefore, this visit can be described as the most meaningless of all visits of the presidents of Ukraine to the United States. Poroshenko is a master of self-praise. Although in situations such as the present, it is better to take care of the long term, rather than achieving some immediate small pleasures that happened in Washington,”- says Kozhara.
