The President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, took part in a ceremony celebrating the introduction of a visa-free regime for Ukraine with the EU. Poroshenko spoke about “a new era”, and said goodbye to Russia, citing a poem by classic Russian author Lermontov.
“The Ukrainian people and the whole of Ukraine have reached a new historical era, and this event marks the final break of our state with the Russian Empire. The Ukrainian democratic world is abandoning the authoritarian Russian world. “Farewell, unwashed Russia, a country of slaves, and their nobles. Goodbye blue uniforms, and you, their loyal people.”
Ed: It is disputed whether Lermontov ever wrote these lines, and is considered that his name was wrongly affiliated with the poem.
