The delegation includes 69 representatives from 32 private companies, state and municipal administrations.

“Head of the delegation is the special adviser to the Japanese government Eiichi Hasegawa. During the next five days, they will visit the islands of Kunashir, Iturup and Shikotan”, said the statement.

The Japanese intend to assess opportunities for common economic activities in the islands, as previously agreed by President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Prior to this visit, experts came together in the Sakhalin region to discuss agriculture, fishing, tourism, energy, medicine, and waste disposal.

Sakhalin governor Oleg Kozhemyako views the visit as a big step forward in bilateral relations.

According to him, the authorities are willing to provide conditions for business development in the region.

“It is important for us to find the largest number of points of contact with the Russian part in the Kuril Islands”, said in turn the adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Eiichi Hasegawa.

According to the Japanese representative, the vision of the structures will help to identify more effectively the areas of cooperation and develop concrete projects.
