Moscow is wary of the NATO enlargement process, in such proximity to the Russian border, as it constitutes a direct threat to national security. This was stated by presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO.
“We believe that this threatens our security and the balance of power in Eurasia. Of course, the Russian party shall take all necessary measures to rebalance the situation and protect their own interests and their own safety, “– Peskov said.
On the question of Ukraine’s chances to join NATO, the Kremlin spokesman said that “we do not call such decisions.”
“But fact is, this is a country where civil war is continuing, the rest of the decision is up to Brussels and in the European capitals, from where the overall management of the process takes place”, – concluded the spokesman.
Ed: NATO protocol specified the absence of civil war in any country seeking to join the alliance.
