The de facto South Ossetia republic, partially recognized by the International Community yet still claimed by Georgia, intends to establish relations with the two separatist republics of Donbass. At the moment Tskhinvali is the only political entity to recognize the sovereignty of the territories of Donetsk and Lugansk. Recognition took place in June 2014, shortly after the declaration of independence by the two territories from Ukraine.

In order to develop mutual ties, last May, Tskhinvali’s authorities signed a friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance treaty with the People’s Republic of Donetsk, as well as a protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Following the signing of this document, the authorities of Donetsk and Tskhinvali have publicly displayed the will to open embassies in their respective countries.

In Ossetia, the news was announced by the President – Anatoly Bibilov – during the presentation of the new Foreign Minister Dmitry Medoyev (formerly South Ossetian Ambassador to Russia). According to Bibilov, the People’s Republic of Donetsk would be ready to host a South-Ossetian Representation, soon to be followed by Tskhinvali. Bibilov also added that the Tskhinvali’s government intends to conclude similar agreements with the People’s Republic of Lugansk, before initiating stable diplomatic relations with it.
