The Iranian Defense Minister, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, and his Iraqi counterpart, Major General Irfan Al Hayali, today signed a bilateral military/defense agreement.

The agreement includes establishing a broader military and defense cooperation in various fields between Iran and Iraq.

One of the most important points of the agreement relies on developing a cooperation and exchange of experiences in combating terrorism, religious extremism, border security, training of the troops, as well as technical, logistical and military support.

At the end of the signing ceremony, the Iranian and Iraqi defense ministers stressed the importance of deepening the defense cooperation between the two countries.

They also expressed hope that the newly signed agreement would result in a more serious, deeper and generally more effective cooperation between the two sides.

The Iraqi defense minister arrived in Tehran on Saturday as the head of a Iraqi defense delegation, following an invitation by his Iranian counterpart.

“Security cooperation between the countries that were formerly victims of terrorism is an absolute necessity that could ideally help to prevent the return of terrorism, as well as military interventions of foreign forces, made under the pretext of fighting against the terrorists”, said Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, after meeting Al Hayali.

The Secretary of the Supreme Council of the Iranian National Security also assured that Iran will continue to support the Iraqi Armed forces, until all terrorists are gone, adding that Iran is fully prepared for the process of rebuilding Iraq, noting that cooperation with Iran is highly important for the future of Iraq as constant attempts are being made on dividing the country.

Relying almost entirely on its internal capabilities, the Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Forces, made an enormous sacrifice in a highly efficient fight against ISIS terrorists whose presence in Iraq has now almost perished.

In a relatively short period of time, Iraq was almost cleansed of ISIS, despite some officials claimed the fight could take up to 7 years.
