An Israeli Army officer was fatally wounded by one of his fellow soldiers after pretending to be a Palestinian.

The incident happened during a Tuesday’s training exercise in Tel Rumeida district of Hebron, in the occupied Palestinian territories of West Bank.

The deceased was later identified as David Golovenchik, a 22-year-old army commander, who led the combat exercise.

He, however, forgot to tell his fellow soldiers to unload their weapons before the drill began.

Golovenchik first took off his gear and started to act that he is a Palestinian going through the Israeli security checkpoint.

He then began simulating a stabbing attack, during which, he was fatally shot by one of his fellow soldiers.

Although the Israeli military officials said the incident did not happen deliberately, they nonetheless began with an investigation.

Golovenchik was buried on Wednesday.

Such incidents, at least when involving Palestinians, are said to be relatively common.

According to various estimates of the human rights organisations, a large number of Palestinians, children including, suspected of carrying out the attacks, get killed every year.

“The training simulation that left an Israeli commander dead on Tuesday tragically mirrored the pattern of killings that have left scores of Palestinians dead in recent years,” the Electronic Intifada wrote.
