Russian President Vladimir Putin assured that Moscow would respond to the latest batch of Washington’s sanctions in a timely and appropriate manner, however, the exact form and timing of the response are yet to be announced as they depend on the final version of the new sanctions against Russia.

During a press conference with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Ninisto, following bilateral talks in the Finnish capital city of Helsinki on Thursday, Putin said the adoption of latest batch of US sanctions against Russia would be an obvious example of how the US is exploiting its geopolitical position in order to ensure that its economic interests are implemented at the expense of its allies.

“For a long time, we have been subjected to provocative acts. They have expelled a large number of our diplomats at once without any explanation and then confiscated our diplomatic possessions, which goes beyond any logic because it contradicts all the principles of international law in the field of diplomatic relations,” Putin said.

He also considered the new sanctions as “absolutely illegitimate from the standpoint of international law, while also violating the principles of international trade and WTO rules.”

For his part, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, said the response to the latest batch of US sanctions will be made by the President Putin himself.

On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives adopted a new bill which is further extending the sanctions, imposed by the United States on Russia.

The document is due to be sent to the Senate soon in order to be handed over to US President Donald Trump.

If the draft is adopted in its current form, the new package of US sanctions against Russia will become the largest since 2014.

The European Union has described the proposed American sanctions as a “unilateral step” by Washington.

In its statement, the European Commission expressed a concern over the adoption of new sanctions by the US House of Representatives.

The Commission is said to be especially concerned over the possible negative consequences, resulting from the sanctions, namely as regards the distribution of energy sources, as well as possible negative political implications, noting the importance of coordinating the policy of sanctions among the G7 countries.

Both Iran and Russia have since responded to the new batches of sanctions, aimed at each country, and stressed that they would not leave the US actions without being dealt accordingly.

The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said it was both logical and necessary to respond to such unacceptable and provocative acts, while the deputy Russian foreign minister stressed that Moscow will not leave sanctions without a response, adding that Washington has become a threat to the country.

Meanwhile, the German officials expressed their dissatisfaction with Washington’s latest decision to sanction Russia.

The German Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries said the new US sanctions against Russia are negatively impacting German businesses and will likely sour relations between Berlin and Washington.

“The United States has stepped out of the common path with the European Union as regards issuing sanctions against Russia”, Zypries said in an interview with a German public TV, adding that a lack of coordination with the EU on the issue could have devastating effect on German companies doing business with Russia.
