German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel is firmly determined that Turkey will not be able to join the European Union as long as it is being ruled by the regime of the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“It doesn’t mean that we don’t want them to join us, it’s just that under Erdogan Turkey is rapidly moving in the opposite direction of what the EU stands for, and it’s quite clear that in current situation Turkey will never become a member of the European Union”, Gabriel said in an interview with the German Bild newspaper.

Previously, the Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said that Turkey will not become the member of the European Union by 2023, when the 100th anniversary of foundation of the modern Turkish state will be celebrated.

“President Erdogan definitely demonstrates dictatorial features. The way he treats critics, dissidents and minorities is absolutely unacceptable… Even if Ankara wants to join the European Union by 2023, this will not happen”, Kurz told the Die Welt newspaper in an interview.

The Turkish-European relations deteriorated greatly after the alleged anti-Erdogan coup attempt last year.

The European Union reacted negatively to Ankara’s post-coup purges, which included the arrests of thousands of people working in the sectors of the military, education, judiciary, legislation, etc…Tens of thousands of people were also fired from their jobs.

In a response to Ankara’s post-coup purges and other measures of repression, Brussels suspended the talks on Turkey’s membership in the EU that have been going on since 2005.
