US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation in Iraq and Syria in order to counter Iran’s influence.

The White House issued a statement, saying the two presidents held a telephone conversation on Friday, during which they discussed ways of increasing cooperation in dealing with the ongoing crises in Syria and Iraq, with the highest attention being paid to countering  the “malign” influence of Iran.

Macron and Trump also discussed ways to reach a political solution in Libya and combat terrorist activities in the region of Sahel.

Both presidents expressed their contempt for Nicolas Maduro and his government in Venezuela, saying he should “restore” the rights of the Venezuelan people.

The two also expressed the importance of reaching a peaceful settlement in Ukraine and noted that both countries share a common ground as regards the issue of North Korea.

According to the White House statement, the two sides stressed the importance of respecting the Minsk Protocol by all parties involved, noting that this is the only way to reach a peaceful solution in Ukraine.
