The air defense systems of the Russian Federation in the Far East have been put on high alert because of the worsening of the situation in the North Korean peninsula. This was stated by the former head of the Committee of the Council of Federation on Defense and Security, Viktor Ozerov.

He noted that at the moment additional measures are being taken to ensure the security of the Far Eastern region.

“What is happening now around North Korea can not but cause us concern. The air defense and air defense forces are reinforced in the Far Eastern region. We monitor everything that is happening, the zones of possible launches [of missiles] are under increased attention,” Ozerov said.

At the same time, he stressed that the air defense forces are aimed at protecting not only from North Korean missiles that may be off course, but also to deter the American side from taking more serious steps against North Korea.

“The forces of air defense, nuclear deterrence allow us to keep the Americans from more decisive steps (towards North Korea). It is the possible reaction of the United States that forces the Russian Federation to strengthen security measures, ” he said.

Earlier, the United States and North Korea exchanged a number of threats. US President Donald Trump promised to punish Pyongyang in case of a possible attack by “fire and fury” and threatened “unimaginable consequences” to the republic. In turn, North Korea said that the military is studying the possibility of a missile strike at US military facilities on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

The air defense forces of the Russian Federation consist of anti-aircraft missile forces, air defense and radio-technical troops, as well as special troops for various purposes.
