The most highly paid professions in Russia in the first half of 2017 were – ship captain and aircraft commander. Their salaries were 500 thousand rubles per month (USD $8,500) and 320 thousand rubles per month (USD $5, 400), respectively, citing data from the Ministry of Labor.
The third position was taken by chief technologist of the gold mining industry with a salary of 312 thousand rubles a month.
The Ministry of Labor compiled the following list, for the top ten highly paid jobs in Russia, as it stood in the first quarter of 2017.
1. Ship captain – 500 thousand rubles.
2. Aircraft commander – 320 thousand rubles.
3. Chief technologist of gold mining industry – 312 thousand rubles.

4. Head coach of ice hockey team – 300 thousand rubles.
5. Head of construction site – 250 thousand rubles.
6. Dentist – 200 thousand rubles.
7. Risk analysis manager – 200 thousand rubles.
8. Electrical engineer – 195 thousand rubles.
9. Computer science analyst / IT specialsit – 190 thousand rubles.
10. Second aircraft pilot (non-commander) – 180 thousand rubles.
According to Rosstat, in the first half of 2017 the average salary in Russia amounted to 38.7 thousand rubles. (USD $664 per month.) Compared to the same period in 2016, it grew by 7.3%.
In September, the government approved an increase in the minimum wage – from January 1, 2018, it should reach 9489 rubles. (USD $167 per month – not a viable income in large cities but still exists in rural Russian territories.)
