At least 50 people have been killed and more than 200 left injured following a mass shooting that took place at an open-air country music festival in Las Vegas.

The city’s famous strip was on lockdown for a rather long period of time due to intense automatic gunfire that reportedly came from a top floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

Thousands of people dived for cover as hundreds of shots rained down on the crowd during the Route 91 Harvest Festival at about 10.20pm local time.

The Police later said to have neutralized a suspected attacker, adding that they did not believe there were any more attackers.

Some early eyewitness accounts, however, claim there were at least two or three attackers shooting down from hotel’s top floor.

The shooting came towards the end of the three-days long Route 91 Harvest Festival, and right in time when the American country singer Jason Aldean was on stage.

According to his Instagram account, Aldean and his crew are both safe.

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

The shooter has since been identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock.
