BERLIN, Germany. German police arrested a 19-year-old Syrian citizen on Tuesday, suspected of preparing an islamism-motivated terror attack.

According to the German Counter-Terrorism Bureau, the special forces units arrested a young man, identified as “Yamen A” at Tuesday dawn in the northeastern city of Schwerin.

The German federal prosecutor specializing in terrorism issues said the young man was suspected of planning and preparing an islamism-inspired terror attack in Germany, using powerful explosive devices.

“It is not known if the young man had already chosen his target”, the prosecutor said, noting there is no information on whether he belongs to any of the terrorist groups.

The investigators, however, said that the young man reportedly made a decision back in July 2017 already to detonate his explosives somewhere in Germany in order to kill or injure as many people as possible.

In the following two weeks, he began collecting chemicals and equipment needed to make an explosive device, capable of carrying out an attack of his desired proportions, though his plans were eventually thwarted by law enforcement.
