Russian Defense Ministry plans to honour the famous Syrian Major General Issam Zahreddine who was yesterday killed after his vehicle struck an ISIS land mine in the eastern province of Deir Ez Zour, the Russian media reported on Thursday.

The Russian daily Kommersant noted that Major General Issam Zahreddine played a crucial role in lifting the siege that was imposed on the city of Deir Ez Zour by ISIS terrorists, pointing out that the Russian military acknowledged the achievements made by Zahreddine in the war against terrorism.

Born in 1961 in As Suwayda province, Major General Zahreddine was the commander of the elite 104th Airborne Brigade of the Syrian Republican Guard.

His actions led to the changing of the course of the Syrian war multiple times.
