Thousands of people worldwide are reportedly unable to access the social networking site Facebook and a photo sharing site Instagram (itself owned by Facebook), after they crashed on Wednesday, presumably due to a database error.

On Facebook, lots of users were in panic when they were greeted with the so-called “white screen of death”.

The issue is well known among the community and is particularly annoying because the users are unable to do anything, not even report a problem due to Facebook returning nothing but a blank screen, meaning they have to contact Facebook through email.

In some cases, users were waiting up to 4 weeks to have their accounts restored.

This time, however, things seem to be under control as lots of Facebook and Instagram users have received messages that database maintenance is already going on.

This isn’t the first time that the world’s most frequently used social networking sites go blank.

On August 26th, a similar problem also affected thousands of users worldwide. It was eventually fixed after an hour.
