Donetsk is under fire again. More than two thousand ammunition rounds were fired by the Ukrainian forces in recent days. They use howitzers, mortars and rocket artillery, aiming at residential areas. A child was killed overnight and two more were wounded. Settlements in the vicinity of Donetsk – those that are closest to the line of demarcation, suffer the most.
The Ukrainian artillery deliberately aims at residential areas. Street lighting, water supply and heating systems have been damaged.
Streets of Kievsky district of Donetsk are literally strewn with fragments from 82-mm shells. They fly by within a few meters from houses, damaging cars and everything else in their way. Thousands of city residents take their children out of their houses during shelling, and into basements.
By one account, from a veteran of WWII, Vera Borymskaya, who had left her house a minute before shelling had targeted her area. She returned to find shell fragments riddle the walls of her apartment.
According to the latest information, 120 and 82 millimeter caliber shells are being fired, as well as 29 rounds of rocket-propelled grenades, and two tank shots have been unleashed by Ukrainian forces in the northern part of Donetsk. This area of the city is on the line of demarcation and is being attacked almost daily.
