KIEV, Ukraine. A well-known Kiev TV journalist, Vyacheslav Pihovshek, in protest against language restrictions introduced by the authorities, broadcasted his latest programme episode in the Russian language.
Pihovshek explained his actions – stating that he “fully proved his loyalty to the state language of Ukraine”, having worked on television since 1995, exclusively in Ukrainian. At the same time, he noted that the transition to the Russian language “was largely spontaneous.”
“It was the emotional reaction of a healthy person, who was being prescribed what to do. To me as a journalist, being forcefully told in what language to go on the air was unjust. “
According to the journalist, totalitarianism arises there, “where your will is not yours but imposed.” This is a courageous act, in context of a number of media personalities that have been killed over the recent years who stood up for the Russian language in Ukraine, or for Russia in general.
