The Lebanese Army issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming the arrest of the notorious jihadist cleric Mustafa Al Hujairi, also known as “Abu Taqiya.”

According to the statement, Al Hujairi was taken into custody on Wednesday after being apprehended in the border town of Arsal.

The investigation was initiated under the supervision of the competent authorities.

Lebanese media reported that security forces found weapons in Al Hujairi’s car.

Several arrest warrants against Al Hujairi were issued by the Lebanese authorities due to his involvement in the killing of Lebanese soldiers and the events in Arsal.

In the Summer of 2014, the town of Arsal was briefly overran by terrorists linked to ISIS and Al Qaeda.

The terrorists kidnapped a number of Lebanese soldiers.

Al Hujairi was reportedly involved in the negotiations with the government for their release.

Although majority of them were released, at least nine were killed.

Their bodies were discovered in early 2017.

According to reports in the Lebanese press, Al Hujairi’s son confirmed his father’s involvement in the attacks on Lebanese soldiers in Arsal.

The Lebanese security services, particularly the military intelligence, continue to pursue a number of participants in the attacks against the Lebanese Army and which started in early February 2013 when gunmen attacked a military patrol in Arsal and killed Major Pierre Bechalani and Sargeant Ibrahim Zahraman.

The families of the Army martyrs repeatedly called for the arrest of Al Hujairi and his son because of their involvement in many attacks against the Lebanese Army.

Previously, an agreement was reached for the departure of the Saraya Ahl Al Sham terrorists from Jaroud Arsal  area at the Lebanese-Syrian border and fulfilled on the 12th of August in two batches.
